Beans and Bytes: Why I Joined Tchibo TECH and Why You Might Want To

Before joining Tchibo TECH, I knew the brand mainly for its coffee. What I didn’t expect was how deeply tech-driven the business had become and how ambitious the plans were. Today, Tchibo is no longer just a coffee company but a complex, fast-moving retail ecosystem, and tech is at the center of it all. 

We operate across multiple 9 European countries, offering weekly-changing product drops across categories like coffee, clothing, furniture, household goods, electronics, even mobile plans. That rotating assortment model brings challenges you don’t see in typical eCommerce setups. Each week, we push a whole new catalog of items live, new data, new logistics flows, new pricing, new customer experiences.  

As we are committed to Digital Evolution and to support this pace, we’re not maintaining legacy systems, but rebuilding from the ground up. We’ve moved toward a cloud-native, microservices-based architecture on Google Cloud, using Java, Kotlin, Node.js, and TypeScript across our services. Our teams follow CI/CD principles and we’re shifting toward event-driven and data-centric design patterns. We care a lot about observability, automated testing, and maintaining a clean architecture. 

My favourite part? Real technical autonomy. Teams are structured around product domains, and developers are trusted to make architectural decisions, contribute to design and own services end-to-end. The work we do has high-impact because if something breaks, customers feel it. That keeps us sharp, but also gives a sense of purpose. 

Best news is that the new tech hub in Bucharest is growing and we’re looking for engineers who want to build systems that power both digital and physical experiences, enjoy solving complexity, and care about writing clean code. 

Our setup is hybrid - you choose what works for you. The team culture is respectful and open. No ego, just good engineering talks. If something doesn’t make sense, we challenge it. If there’s a better tool or method, we explore it. 

We're currently hiring for Full Stack Developers, Software Engineers, SAP Consultants, Data Analysts, and Data Scientists but we’re looking for thinkers, not just titles.
